The federal Freedom of Information and Privacy Act enables persons and groups to obtain information from the government through a “FOIA” request. The Act also provides the right to ensure that the government keeps personal data confidential. In one FOIA case, Klimaski & Associates, P.C., successfully represented a news organization requesting the federal Bureau of Prisons to provide the amounts of damages it paid in civil lawsuits.
